The global economic crisis threatens the European Union

From confederation to disintegration?

This possibility was recently asserted by the New York Times. The key problem: The presence of an untenable economic mix that includes the massive debt some EU countries owe other EU countries, the decay of global trade, the lure of protectionist programs, the lack of Euro-wide currency integration and the uneven state of development between the many EU members.

The frightening prospect posed by the current situation: European unity is now and will remain a necessary condition for an enduring European peace.
